Capturing Confidence: Madelyn Chan’s Story

On race day, Madelyn Chan doesn’t just see runners crossing the finish line; she sees confidence in motion. Through her lens, she captures moments of joy, determination, and pride as girls support one another and celebrate what they’ve accomplished. For Madelyn, volunteering as a photographer with Girls on the Run Los Angeles has been about more than just images; it’s about preserving growth, connection, and self-belief.

Madelyn’s connection to Girls on the Run began years ago as a participant, when she experienced the excitement and sense of belonging that comes with crossing the finish line. So when she later discovered an opportunity to volunteer with GOTRLA, she felt a natural pull to return. Seeing a need for photographers, she jumped at the chance to give back in a way that felt meaningful to her. After earning her photography certificate from Glendale Community College in 2022, Madelyn was eager to continue growing her skills beyond the classroom. Volunteering with GOTRLA gave her the opportunity to do just that, combining creativity with purpose. “I wanted to improve my skills behind the camera,” she shares, “and this felt like the perfect fit.”

Outside of GOTRLA, Madelyn also volunteers with the Japanese American National Museum, where she photographs community events ranging from cultural festivals to local gatherings. These experiences have strengthened her ability to capture authentic, vibrant moments, which she brings to every GOTRLA event. Through her volunteer work, Madelyn has grown not only as a photographer but as a person. Learning to navigate challenges behind the camera has helped her build confidence and embrace mistakes as part of the process. Over time, she’s come to see growth not as perfection, but as persistence. That perspective is reflected in what she witnesses at every 5K. Madelyn sees girls face challenges, encourage one another, and cross the finish line stronger than when they started. These moments serve as a powerful reminder that confidence is built step by step.

As a volunteer photographer, Madelyn helps bring GOTRLA’s mission to life. Her photos capture the energy, connection, and accomplishments that define each season, ensuring those moments continue to inspire long after race day. Madelyn hopes her journey encourages others to keep going, even when things feel uncertain. As a woman on the autism spectrum, she understands the importance of self-acceptance and embracing one’s unique perspective. Through her work, she hopes to remind others that growth comes from believing in yourself and continuing to try.

When she’s not behind the camera, Madelyn enjoys writing poetry, painting, and exploring nature through photography. No matter where she is, her passion remains the same: telling stories that reflect resilience, joy, and the power of community. Returning to Girls on the Run as a volunteer has come full circle for Madelyn. It’s a space where creativity and confidence meet and where every girl is reminded that she is capable of more than she imagines.
